Mom, Grandma, and More: My Favorite “Mom” Books | Charlotte Moms Network

A great way to connect with children on particular topics is through books.  Reading books with your child(ren) provides an opportunity to make text-to-self connections and serves as a starting point for further conversations.  As an early childhood educator for more than 25 years (and a mom for 10!), I’ve come across so many wonderful books on a variety of themes.  Here are some of my favorite mom/child and grandma/child books in honor of Mother’s Day:

  • Full, Full, Full of Love by Trish Cooke: One of my all-time favorites!  This book is about a little boy who goes to his grandmother’s house every weekend for a meal with his immediate and extended family.  A wonderful story about a special relationship between a boy, his grandmother, and their family traditions.
  • The Night Before Mother’s Day by Natasha Wing:  I love Natasha Wing’s books for teaching about holidays in an easy-to-understand, fun way.  The rhyming prose is appealing to all ages, and the concept of preparing for Mother’s Day is clearly shared in a relatable way.
  • The Family Book and The Mommy Book by Todd Parr:  Todd Parr’s books teach about a variety of subjects in an inclusive way.  By making mention of all types of families (single parent families, non-traditional families), the books provide visibility and relatability to all children.
  • Just Grandma, Grandpa, and Me by Mercer Mayer:  Mercer Mayer’s stories (which also include Just Me and My Mom) touch upon everyday relationships and situations faced by children in a way that little ones can really connect to.
  • Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney:  The Llama Llama series was a favorite of my son’s, who loved reading about Llama Llama’s interactions with his mama, whether he was missing her…or mad at her!
