I’m more of a savory person than a sweet one, but one of the exceptions to that rule is ice cream. Needless to say, during our time here in Charlotte, we’ve tasted a lot of ice cream in the area. If you’re looking for a spot, try out one of the places below (and recommendations!):
- Andy’s Frozen Custard: The outdoor design at this spot intrigued me, as it reminded me of one of my all-time favorite spots in the northeast: Carvel. Andy’s has lots of options, from ice cream sodas to sundaes to concretes. Recommendation: Boot Daddy Concrete
- Jeni’s Ice Cream: The ice cream at Jeni’s is unique, with flavors such as Watermelon Taffy and Sweet Cream Biscuits and Peach Jam. My kids are traditionalists, so they had a harder time making a choice, but I enjoyed the combinations of textures and flavors. Recommendation: Brown Butter Almond Brittle
- Rita’s: At Rita’s, you can get custard or Italian ice. Vanilla-chocolate swirl on a cone is a favorite choice for the kids. Recommendation: Cookies and Cream Concrete
- Cold Stone Creamery: It had been a long time since I had Cold Stone, and the options did not disappoint. My kids loved watching the ice cream and toppings get mixed together. Recommendations: Fudge Truffle on a Chocolate Waffle Cone; Cookies Make Everything Batter
- Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream: A cute spot with a walk-up counter, and a popular place to go in Indian Land post-dinner. There’s a reason they’ve been around for 80 years! Recommendations: Cinnamon Roll, Chocolate Marshmallow
- Waxhaw Creamery: Stop by this ice cream spot and enjoy the smalltown feel of downtown Waxhaw. Recommendation: S’Mores Sundae
- Abbott’s Frozen Custard: I loved learning that Tega Cay has a reminder of our northeast roots by having an Abbott’s in town. We go classic with this one because it’s so good. Recommendation: Vanilla Custard on a Wafer Cone
