The start of the school year is around the corner, and many of our kids will be heading off to high school for the first time. While college may feel a long way off (gulp!), trust me—it arrives faster than any of us expect.
As moms, we’re juggling a lot—school schedules, sports, activities, carpools, and everything in between. It’s easy to think college is something we’ll worry about “later,” but one of the best things you can do is simply have a roadmap.
As founder of The College & Dorm Corner and a mom of two high schoolers navigating the college admissions process, I am in it with you. Having interviewed dozens of college admissions experts, here’s what matters most each year.

Junior Year: Plan & Prepare
Junior year is often the busiest—and arguably the most important—year of the college admissions process. This is when students begin turning their interests into a college plan
- Continue challenging yourself academically and keep your grades strong.
- Start visiting colleges (in person or virtually) and attend college fairs.
- Prepare for the SAT or ACT, if applicable.
- Build relationships with teachers and request letters of recommendation before summer.
- Create or update your résumé and activities list.
- Brainstorm and begin drafting your Common App essay during the spring and summer.
- Research scholarships and financial aid opportunities.
- Demonstrate interest by attending admissions events and connecting with colleges when appropriate.
- Make the summer before senior year count with meaningful experiences such as a job, internship, volunteering, athletics, research, or a summer program.

A Few Resources to Make the Journey Easier
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that families don’t need more information—they need help knowing what matters most right now.
The Corner Club provides monthly action plans based on your student’s grade level, along with important deadlines, expert advice, and curated resources. Instead of wondering, “What should we be doing right now?” you’ll have a clear plan for the month ahead.
Be sure to check out our full College Prep Guide, featuring trusted college counselors, essay coaches, test prep professionals, financial aid experts, academic coaches, and more. Whether you need support in one area or throughout high school, it’s an easy way to connect with experienced professionals.
Most importantly, remember that every student’s path is different. The college admissions process can feel overwhelming at times, but it truly is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on what matters this year, celebrate the milestones along the way, and know that small steps each year add up to big results.
