Black History Month is celebrated every February, and the city of Charlotte has many events planned to commemorate the achievements of Black Americans. Here is a list of events in the area (please feel free to contact us if you have any to add!):
- Sullenberger Aviation Museum: All month long, the museum will be highlighting Black pioneers in the world of aviation. (4108 Minuteman Way, Charlotte, NC 28208)
- Historic Rosedale: The historic house has been a part of Charlotte’s history since 1815; today, it strives to portray a “truthful, compassionate, and equitable of…African Americans, both enslaved and freed, who lived and worked on this site.” Throughout the month of February, there will be several events held on the grounds, including Afro-Legacy Fest from 11:00am-2:30pm on Sunday, February 8th; a mini-quilting workshop on Saturday, February 21st; the Black History Month Family Experience on Saturday, February 28th from 2:30pm-4:30pm; and a month-long exhibit honoring historical African American educators. - Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture: The Gantt Center highlights Black History Month with events such as Afro Legacy Fest on Saturday, February 7th from 12:00pm-5:00pm and discussions such as “Past, Present, Future: Preserving Black History Across Generations” on Wednesday, February 4th at 6:30pm. - Blush CLT: The venue is hosting several Black History Month events, including Roots and Remix on Saturday, February 7th and Poetry Passion on Friday, February 27th. Check website for tickets and additional details. (7631 Sharon Lakes Road, Charlotte, NC)
- The Independent Picture House: IPH is presenting a variety of iconic movies highlighting Black culture and historic events, including Juice, Do The Right Thing, Master, Uptight, and One Night in Miami. - Mint Museum Uptown: Friday, February 13th marks this year’s Mint 2 Move Cultural Dance Night: Lunar New Year, Casa de la Cultura, and Black History Month. The event starts at 6:30pm and ends at 11:00pm. (500 South Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC)
- Charlotte Museum of History: The African American Heritage Festival: Red, White Blue, and Black will take place on Saturday, February 28th from 11:00am-5:00pm. All ages are welcome, and it’s free to attend. The festival will honor Black military service and will have speakers, musical performances, vendors, and art. (3500 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC)
