Celebrating Juneteenth in Charlotte | Charlotte Moms Network

Juneteenth has been officially recognized as a national holiday since 2021.  Celebrated on June 19th, it commemorates the day in 1863 that everyone in the United States, including those who were enslaved, were granted freedom.  Honoring Juneteenth recognizes the full scope of historical facts that has shaped our nation.

Here in Charlotte, there are many events to remember and highlight Juneteenth.  These celebrations are surely something that you shouldn’t miss.

  • Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas (House of Africa, 1215 Thomas Avenue, Charlotte, NC):   A four-day celebration (Thursday, June 12th-Sunday, June 15th) hosted by the House of Africa.  On various days it will include a drum circle, gospel fest, youth culture camp, and more.  Check out the link above for more details.
  • Juneteenth Freedom Weekend Celebration (Downtown Lancaster, 100 North Main Street, Lancaster, SC):  Head over the border to South Carolina for this two-day festival on Friday, June 13th from 5:00pm-10:00pm and Saturday, June 14th from 3:00pm-10:00pm.  
  • Juneteenth Celebration (Stumptown Park, 120 South Trade Street, Matthews, NC): The celebration begins at 5:30pm for vendors, food trucks, and activities; program with music, spoken word, and dance will begin at 6:30pm. It will take place on Wednesday, June 18th.
  • Juneteenth Celebration Block Party (Veterans Park, 103 North Main Street, Huntersville, NC):  Live entertainment by the band Envision as well as family-friendly activities, speakers, and food from 6:00pm-9:00pm on Thursday, June 19th.
  • Juneteenth Jam (Middle C Jazz, 300 South Brevard Street, Charlotte, NC):  Live jazz by Grammy winning John Dillard along with vocalists Lauren Jade, Ryan Brown, and Donald Dean on Thursday, June 19th at 6:00pm.  
  • Juneteenth Festival on the Green (Barber-Scotia College, 145 Cabarrus Avenue West, Concord, NC):  This event will take place on Saturday, June 28th from 11:00am to 5:00pm.  It’s scheduled on a later date than many of the other festivals, but will still contain performances, music, activities and more.
