Summer Road Trip: Wrightsville Beach, NC | Charlotte Moms Network

The North Carolina beaches and coastline are about three-and-a-half hours from Charlotte, and it’s well worth the drive to visit them.  It’s possible to do it as a day trip, but for our trip to Wrightsville Beach, NC, we spent four days enjoying the beach and the area.

It was tremendously hot while we were there, so spending time at the pool and in the ocean were mandatory.  The waves at Wrightsville Beach were a little rough at times (likely due to a storm in the area) and there’s a current that can pull you slightly to the left when you’re boogie boarding in the water.  Still, the water was beautiful:  warm and a bluish-green color, with almost no trace of seaweed (a personal preference of mine!).  We also collected a bunch of pretty shells and rocks, which were easy to find during low tide.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Lumina Resort in Wrightsville Beach, which reminded me of a cross between a Caribbean resort and a beach town hotel like those found on the East Coast.  The rooms were clean, and service was friendly.  There were multiple places on the property to get food, including the Solstice Restaurant, a grill/bar by the pool area, and a little cafe that served coffee, sandwiches, and more.  You could pretty much find anything you needed at the resort, and there was a paved path that led from the pool area to the beach itself.  We had a bunch of kids with us, and they enjoyed moving from place to place on their own (a little independence never hurt anyone!).

Throughout the trip, we enjoyed meals in the area as well as on site, and of course, sampled ice cream within the town.  Kids under 12 eat free at the Holiday Inn Lumina (with a paying adult), which was a great deal for not only breakfast, but one of our dinners as well!

Whether you’re from the Charlotte area or in the East Coast vicinity, I highly recommend a trip to Wrightsville Beach.  See the side bar for restaurants and ice cream spots that we enjoyed during our stay!
